Our team is made up of dedicated professionals who are committed to addressing social problems and inequalities. We have spent the last number of years working in different programs offered through Choices for Youth, supporting youth in the areas of mental health, substance use, housing, trauma, conflict resolution, and crisis intervention. We have an in-depth knowledge of local community resources and the ability to develop and maintain good working relationships with agencies and systems.

Upstream SNA

Upstream SNA

Upstream Canada - NL is a program that aims to help youth become more stable in their lives, improve family relationships, better cope with physical and mental health concerns, as well as help with other challenges experienced by youth and their families. In partnership with Making the Shift and A Way Home Canada, the initiative is a response to the reality that thirty-five to forty-five thousand youth in Canada leave their home lives behind each year (Gaetz, 2016). Upstream NL will be the local partner and will coordinate the program in NL.

Historically, many of our responses to youth challenges have been reactive – that is, we wait until young people are in significant need or experiencing crises before we offer help. Young people often hide the challenges they face in their personal lives in fear of judgement. They do not access the supports they need and can slip through the cracks and become more isolated from their school and community.

By being connected with supports and services at an early age, individuals will be better able to prevent poverty, strengthen their relationships with family and natural supports (natural supports are people that are not actually family members, but are supportive people in a person’s life), and be successful in the areas of education, employment, and overall well-being later in life.

In partnership with the Newfoundland and Labrador English School District (NLESD), Upstream Canada NL aims to provide young people with access to supports that allow youth to improve their home lives and increase involvement in school. Upstream Canada NL is currently working with two junior high schools located in St. John’s and Mount Pearl.

The Upstream program aims to be preventative, and addresses youth issues and school attendance through coordinating with schools and the community. The program works by identifying young people in need of specific supports and whom are at risk of leaving school, and provides them and their families with the supports they need.
